Mary Jo (Garris) Strickland

Mary Jo Garris Strickland, widow of the late John D. Strickland, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg..

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg.  Burial will follow at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens.  Rev. Larry Davis and Rev. Robert Cannon will be officiating.

Mrs. Strickland was born on March 10, 1927 in Colleton County.  She was the daughter of the late William F. Garris and the late Lucy Reddish Garris.  Mrs. Mary Jo graduated from Smoaks High School in 1944 and from Winthrop College in 1948.  Her teaching career began in Fairfax.  She then taught in Sumter and Florence before retiring from Brentwood Elementery in Charleston.  While in Charleston, Mrs. Strickland was an active member of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile.  She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, as long as she was able.  After retirement the Stricklands moved to Orangeburg where they lived until their deaths. 

Survivors include her great niece, Karen (Donnie) Stull of Albany, Georgia; great nephew, James H. Harbiston of Charleston she also leaves behind her caregivers, Rebecca M. Tyler, Marsha E. Redmond, Michelle F. Tyler and Aiko Harris; great-great niece, Rebecca Cardonia of Albany, Georgia..

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church Music Department at  1980 Columbia Rd, Orangeburg, SC 29115.

A visitation will be held from 5:30-7:30 P.M. on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.
