Norman L. “Red” Fairey, 79, of St. Matthews, S.C. passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Lexington Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sara Carson Fairey.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in St. Matthews. Rev. Sara Relaford will be residing. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service. Friends and family may call or visit the home.
Norman was born on Friday, October 13, 1939 in Branchville, S.C. He was the son of the late Marion Norman Fairey and the late Florence Jones Fairey. He graduated from Branchville High School and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was an avid Gamecock fan. Besides his wife, Sara, he is survived by a son, Gregory (Lauren) Fairey of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; daughter, Elizabeth Fairey of Greenbelt, Maryland; two grandson, Hamp Fairey, Walker Fairey both of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Norman is also survived by a sister, Marion (Neville) Knight of Branchville, S.C.
Upon graduation from college, he served three years in the United States Army. Following his service, he worked for the United States Naval Oceanographic Office in Suitland, Maryland and later at the Stennis Space Center at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. His work as an oceanographer took him to many ports around the world.
