Peggy Kizer Dukes Childs died after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She died on December 1, 2017 at her home in Cordova, SC.She was 84 years old. She was cremated and her ashes spread on the grave of her first husband (William F. Dukes) in Branchville, SC at the Ott Cemetery.

She was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and mother in law and friend. She was a true Southern lady. She was very smart, knowledgeable, and full of common sense.
Her daughter Melissa always said “my Mama is the smartest person I know.”

She was was adored by her family and she was a source of pride to us, though she would say that her children were her proudest accomplishment. She was very proud of all her children, but she doted on her grandchildren . She believed in her children, and was very protective of them.

She was an avid gardener and she knew almost every name of each of her many plants. She loved “digging in the dirt”. She was a voracious reader, and she always had a dictionary at hand to look up and learn words old and new. She liked to read books where she “learned something new”.

She was an accomplished cook and loved to cook for her family. She would always fix a meal for us when we visited. Some of our favorites were macaroni pie, banana pudding, and sweet potatoes. And she could fry chicken, fish, squirrel , and any game, like no other.

She loved viewing and learning about all kinds of nature, which was quite easy when she lived on the Edisto River with her 2nd husband Paul. She had so many hummingbirds congregating around her many feeders.

She loved to go to their house in the NC mountains in Cullowhee, and she especially loved entertaining her children and grand children there. It was always an opportunity to teach them even more about nature. Also going to flea markets and thrift shops which was always a thrill for all of us.

She was a Registered Nurse who trained at the Orangeburg Hospital. Two of her younger sisters followed in her footsteps as RNs. She first married W.F Dukes in 1954, and they had 4 children approximately 3 years apart, Martha, Melissa , Billy and Barry.

She was born in St . George , SC in (1933), the daughter Olin Kizer and Ruebelle (Dufford) Kizer.
She grew up on a family farm in Lone Star, SC. She was the 7th of 9 children( 4 brothers and 4 sisters). She picked cotton on their farm.

She loved collecting pretty things and especially jewelry. And her house was always neat and clean.
She loved music. She wanted “The Old Rugged Cross" to be played at her funeral.

She was a beautiful brunette and her children’s friends would remark how she was the prettiest of all the Moms. She loved to dress up, and always looked neat and stylish. She loved to wear her pretty jewelry.

She had a subtle and somewhat wry, sarcastic sense of humor sometimes. And she could carry on a conversation with anyone of any age or social status, being engaging and interesting.

Quotes……One of her favorite quotes was, “if there is a job worth doing, it is worth doing right.”

In her later years she had a favorite black and white skittish cat named Katy who pretty much did not like anyone but her. Her children gave it to her, after her husband Paul died ,and though she said “I don’t want a cat”, she loved her very much, and Katy adored her and liked to sleep with her.

We all miss her so much...

So sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I sincerely apologize for not being able to attend the visitation and I hope that the love of family and friends will comfort and strengthen you in the days ahead. "For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men." Lamentations 3:31-33
