Anita Eunice Smith Burnett, 79, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on July 26, 2026.

Born on December 31, 1946, Anita was the beloved daughter of the late David and Aimee Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Peggy Proctor.

Anita was the devoted wife of Henry Hayne Burnett and a loving mother to her sons, John Ronald Bates and Joseph Ralph Bates (Coleen). She found her greatest joy in being “Neena.” She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chris Bates (Haley) and Matthew Bates and Justin Bates; and by her great-grandchildren, Joseph Bates, William Bates and Avie Bates.

For more than sixty years Anita called the same family property in Orangeburg home. It was there she built a life of love, laughter, family gatherings and countless treasured memories. Her home was a welcoming place that generations came together, creating a legacy of warmth and togetherness that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

Anita dedicated many years of service to the Edisto School District, where she worked as a teacher’s aide and later as an assistant librarian. She was known for her gentle spirit, caring heart and willingness to help others. Whether assisting students, supporting teachers or encouraging young readers, she made a lasting impact on the lives of many children and colleges throughout her career.

Above all else, Anita loved her family. She was a faithful and devoted wife for more than 49 years, a nurturing mother, a proud grandmother and an adoring great-grandmother. She found happiness in the simplest joys of life-sharing meals, celebrating holidays, watching her family grow and spending time with those she loved most. Her kindness, quiet strength and unwavering love created a foundation upon which her family continues to stand.

Though her presence will be deeply missed the love she shared, the memories she created and the example she set will remain with her family forever.

Memorials in Anita's memory may be made to Grove Park Hospice at 1324 Grove Park Dr, Orangeburg, SC 29115 or to Cornerstone Church at 1481 Chestnut St, Orangeburg, SC 29115.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2720 Broughton Street, Orangeburg. Rev. David Lee Mitchell will be officiating.
