Augustus H. "Pete" Smoak, Jr., 88 Mr. Smoak died Monday, March 9, 2015 at UniHealth Post Acute Care in Orangeburg.
The Casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Bethany Baptist Church; 125 Bethany Road; Orbg. with burial in the church cemetery with Rev. Tim Shaw and Rev. Bobby Etheridge officiating directed by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.
Pallbearers will be Don Smoak, Jr., Justin Ott, Kevin Thomas, Robert Smoak, Samuel Bernstel, Sean Bernstel, Tyson McCormick and Michael Anderson
Honorary Pallbearers will be his great grandsons
He was born February 26, 1927 in Cordova, SC; the son of the late Mamie Berry Smoak and Augustus H. Smoak, Sr. Pete was employed at Southern Manufacturing at the age of 16 and worked until called to serve in the U.S. Navy from July 1945 until June 1946 serving on the USS Randolph and was a veteran of World War II. He returned to follow his trade of building special order windows and doors. He met and married his first wife, Rena Johnson, from which four children were born. (Patricia, Don, Carol and Frances). After losing his wife in death he met and married a widow lady Miriam from Branchville with 3 small boys in 1970. From this second union a daughter was born. (Miriam Ann) This fairytale story lasted for 44 years until he lost Miriam in 2014. In the early 70's he starting farming full time. Mr. Pete was known for his boiled peanuts. He worked at Don's Auto Electric for 10 years after farming. He was a member of Branchville Baptist Church and a former member of Bethany Baptist. He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, and two children, Don Smoak, Sr. and Carol S. Rast.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Smoak, Frances (Danny) Collins, Miriam Ann (Bryan) Spires; three sons; Allen (Sandie) Ott, David (Sheri) Ott and Mark (Wendy) Ott. He is also survived by two sisters; Shirley (Bob) Casper and Betty Hall; 18 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at his home and at the funeral home.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.
