Bernice Hughes Ashe

Bernice Elizabeth Hughes Ashe, 91, died on Monday, March 7, 2016 in Bamberg, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Canaan Baptist Church in Cope, S.C. with Rev. Odell Breland and Rev. Alan Woodward officiating. Burial will follow in Myers Cemetery in the Canaan Community.

Mrs. Ashe was born on November 2, 1924 in Orangeburg County. She was the daughter of the late Patrick Louis Hughes and the late Willie Lou Binnicker Hughes. She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church in the Canaan Community where she was a member of the WMU and the Adult Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin Woodrow Ashe, Sr., a sister, Jennie Lou Bolen and 2 brothers, John D. Hughes and Patrick Louis Hughes.

Survivors include her sons Melvin W. Ashe, Jr. (Ann) of Fayetteville, NC, Richard Ashe (Linda) of Cope, S.C.; grandchildren, Barbara Dalton of Fayetteville, NC, Beth Balkcum (Jon) of Willmington, NC, Mel Ashe (Toni) of Kansas City, MO, Scarlet Geddings (Wayne) of Orangeburg, S.C., Josh Ashe of Cope, S.C. and 5 great grandchildren, David Geddings, Ashelynn Combs, Kyle Combs, Simms Balkcum and Charlotte Balkcum.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 from 1:00-2:00 P.M. at Canaan Baptist Church prior to the service.
