Carl Joye

Cope, S.C.

We are here today to honor and remember the life of Carl Edwin Joye Sr. - a man who meant so much to so many. A husband, a father, a paw, a brother, an uncle, a friend - and above all, a man of deep faith, unwavering love, and quiet strength.

Carl is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janet S. Joye; by his sons, Adam Joye [Vicki] and Carl E. Joye, Jr. [Alison]; grandchildren, Kayla Brown [Billy], Drew Joye, Austin Nettles, Benjamin Joye, William Joye and Max Joye; siblings, Carroll Joye [Beverly], Sue Hughes [Dennis], Mike Ferris [Susan], Zane Ferris [Kim] and Cathy Schlessinger [Steve]; preceded in death by his parents, Carl Dargan and Margaret Joye, and siblings, Junie Joye, Janice Ferris, Mary Julia Johnson, Sylvia Faulling, and Donna Kemmerlin.

Carl was a devoted Christian, and he lived his life in a way that reflected that devotion. He was hardworking, loyal, and had a sense of humor that could light up even the darkest of days. If you knew Carl, you knew laughter; sometimes dry, sometimes unexpected, but always genuine.

He loved his family more than anything in this world. That love was shown not just in words, but in countless everyday actions: in the way he looked after those he cared about, in the way he listened, in the way he was always present. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met, not because he demanded attention, but because his authenticity and kindness simply couldn’t be ignored.

Carl had a unique way of enjoying life’s simple pleasures, such as riding around on his golf cart, checking on happenings around Cope. He could often be found feeding the Cope chickens, or cruising around with his beloved dog – Roc - riding shotgun. He performed these simple routines with joy and intention, in a manner that continues to speak volumes about the kind of man he was.

He was also deeply proud of his service in the United States Marine Corps, and his time in Vietnam was something he carried with honor and humility. Carl retired as a 1st SGT with SCDNR with 30 years of service. He was a patriot in the truest sense: not loud or boastful, but firm in his belief in duty, sacrifice and country.

Carl also had a spirit of adventure. He loved to travel, and he made it a point to explore as much of this country as he could. He visited nearly every U.S. state, each trip adding to the tapestry of a life well lived.

Today, we say goodbye to Carl. But above that, we celebrate him. We remember the laughter, the wisdom, the love, and the faith that he carried with him each day. His legacy is one of devotion - to God, to family, and to a life of purpose.

We will miss him deeply. But his presence will stay with us in every story told, every lesson remembered, and every moment we choose to live fully and love deeply, just like he did.

Rest well, Carl. You’ve more than earned it.
