David Wayne Sturkie, Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family of David “Wayne” Sturkie, Sr. announce his passing on Friday, August 30, 2024, after an extended illness.

Wayne was born on July 4, 1947, in Orangeburg, S.C.  He was the son of the late D.C. Sturkie and the late Lurene Myers Sturkie.  He was a graduate of Edisto High School where he excelled in basketball and track.  His love of farming turned into a life-long career.  Wayne was a faithful lifetime member of Two-Mile Swamp Baptist Church in Cope, S.C.  He was also an avid Clemson Tiger Football fan.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Brenda Edwards Sturkie; son, David Wayne Sturkie, Jr. (Kelli); daughter, Beth S. Curton (Richard); grandchildren, Matthew R. Kotler (Nikki), Trae, Tori, and Tatum Sturkie; great-grandchildren, Lukas Gage Myers, Drake Augustus Buck, Abbigayle Nicole Leedecke; sisters, Betty S. Edgemon, Sylvia Wells, Ernestine S. Sanders and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda S. Azavedo.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Two-Mile Swamp Baptist Church, 1066 Bonnette Road in Cope, S.C.  Rev. Ted Williams and Rev. Steve Edgington will be officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Two-Mile Swamp Baptist Church prior to the funeral service.  At other times friends and family may call the residence, 157 Stump Road in Neeses.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Matthew Kotler, Trae Sturkie, Lamar Collins, Bert Sanford, Doug Murdaugh, Billy Bochette, Rodney Smith and Harold Hayden.

Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Joye, Ted Collins, Kevin Collins, Bobby Wells, John Sanders, Jeff Edgemon, Allen Fanning, Dick Thomas, Terry Bisson, Mike Edwards, Jason Doremus and Scott Fairey.
