Eugene "Gene" S. Pettit, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on October 19, 2025, just one day shy of his 91st birthday. He was born on October 20, 1934, in Endicott, New York, and throughout his life, Gene exemplified the values of hard work, faith, and love for family.
Gene dedicated 23 years to a distinguished career at Greenwood Mills, where he earned the respect and affection of his colleagues. His commitment to excellence mirrored his profound dedication to his family and community. An alumnus of Bowling Green University, he took pride in his educational journey, seeing it as a steppingstone that fostered both personal growth and a lifelong love for learning.
A faithful and active member of St. George Baptist Church in Orangeburg, Gene found joy and fulfillment in serving others and nurturing his faith. He embraced the church community, creating bonds that enriched his life and those around him. His spirit and unwavering belief made a lasting impression on many, and his devotion to his principles served as an inspiration to all who knew him.
Gene leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, whose love and partnership were cornerstones in his fulfilling life. Together they created a nurturing environment for their three children: Stuart (Laurie), Kevin (Jessica), and Amy. His legacy continues through his seven cherished grandchildren, who will forever carry his warmth and wisdom in their hearts.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Edith Bevin Pettit. As we gather to honor his remarkable life and enduring legacy, let us hold dear the memories of a man who brought kindness, strength, and love into our lives.
Visitation and burial services will take place on October 23, 2025, at St. George Baptist Church Sanctuary 2590 Shillings Bridge Road, in Orangeburg, SC. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 am with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 am. Family and friends are invited to share in the celebration of a life well-lived, reflecting on the love that Gene freely offered, and the profound impact he had on all who knew him.
