Obituary

Gary F. Hitchcock, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, May 8, 2026. Born on January 1, 1945, Mr. Hitchcock lived a life marked by warmth, dedication, and an enduring spirit that touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Mr. Hitchcock devoted over three decades of his career to Utica Tool until its closure, after which he retired from Federal Mogul. His work ethic and commitment were a testament of his professional life. A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Orangeburg, Gary found deep fulfillment in his faith and fellowship. He was an active participant in the Barnabas Sunday School Class and shared his musical gift as a member of the First Baptist Church choir for more than 50 years.  Known for his ever-present smile and friendly demeanor, Gary was always ready to engage with those around him, making everyone feel welcome and valued. He enjoyed gardening and had a profound love for flowers.

Gary’s family remembers him with great love and fondness. He is survived by his daughter, Melanie (Jeff) Kittrell; grandchildren, Jana Kittrell, Caleb Kittrell, Abby (Kyle) Childress, Joshua Kittrell, and Delilah Kittrell; his sisters, Pam (Edwin) Eargle and Gail (Monroe) Risinger; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends who were enriched by his kindness and generosity. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Frances Getman Hitchcock; the mother of his children, Linda Hitchcock; and his daughter, Robin Harbeson.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Gary's caregiver, Valarie Britt for the love and care that she has shown to Gary as well as his family.  The family would also like to thank Gary's First Baptist Church family and Edisto Home Health and Hospice for the love and respect that has been given.

The family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation on Monday, May 11, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., located at 1012 Whitman St SE, Orangeburg, South Carolina.
