Gertie (Varnes) Spires

Gertie Varnes Spires, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in Neeses, South Carolina. Born on April 17, 1945, in Norway, South Carolina, she lived a life rooted in faith, family, and cherished traditions.

Gertie was the beloved daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John H. and Sennie Walling Varnes. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Griffin and Gladys Adcox; brothers, Samson "Mac" Varnes and Henry "Buster" Varnes; her daughter-in-law, Martha Brunson; grandson, Don Brunson, Jr.; and granddaughter, Leslie Brunson.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Don Brunson, Sr., of Swansea; grandchildren, Fallon Millender (Michael) of Swansea and Jared Brunson of Swansea; great-grandchildren, Andrew Inabinet, Zachary Millender, Lachlan Millender, and Arya Millender; as well as a number of nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

A woman of deep devotion to both her family and her faith, Gertie was a faithful member of Salem Baptist Church. Her love for her church community was matched only by the joy she found in spending time with loved ones. Antiquing was one of her favorite pastimes—she delighted in discovering treasures from the past and sharing stories behind each find.

Pallbearers will include Randy Brunson, Chad Brunson, Michael Millender, Andrew Inabinet, Jared Brunson, and Zachary Millender—each representing generations touched by Gertie's enduring love.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Edisto Home Care and Hospice for their compassionate care during Gertie’s final days and for the unwavering support they provided to the family.

A Visitation will be held on May 31, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church, 11434 North Road, North.

A Funeral Service will be held on May 31, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church immediately following the visitation.  Pastor Randy Lucas will be officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
