Gilbert L O'Cain

Gilbert L. O’Cain,  71 of Rowesville died Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Palmetto Richland Hospital after experiencing a series of on-going health problems .

Funeral Services will be held  11:00 AM Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at New Hope United Methodist Church of Rowesville. Burial will follow in Rowesville Cemetery with Rev. Sandra Whetsell officiating.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Bell, Ricky Padgett, Trey Johnson, David Hutto, Will Smith and Thristan Fulton

He was born on August 6, 1945 in Orangeburg County, SC; the son of the late Hubert O’Cain and the late Azalea Cooper O’Cain. He graduated from Cameron High School and he is a member of New Hope United Methodist Church of Rowesville. He has been married for fifty-one years to Goldie Abstance O’Cain. He was employed as a lead man at Utica Tool Company and as a Foreman at American Koyo. In 1995 he bought and began operating O’Cain’s Grocery, a convenience store in Rowesville. He enjoyed the store and serving his customers and friends, but his true love was his land and being able to climb on his tractors and other farm equipment as long as his health permitted.

Survivors   include his wife, Goldie A. O’Cain of the home, two daughters, Shelia (Jackie) Derrick of Columbia, SC and Nicole (Mike) Smoak of Rowesville, SC, a sister, Melanie (Frankie) Metts of Orangeburg, SC and a brother, Hubert “Buddy” (Renee) O’Cain of Orangeburg, SC. He is also survived by four grandchildren; Bailey Smoak and Brandon Smoak both of Rowesville, SC and Amanda Steffen both of Decatur, Georgia and Cody Steffen of Columbia, SC and two great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors and medical teams who have cared for and treated Gilbert over the past three years.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, October 17, 2016 at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

The family suggest memorials be made to New Hope United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 54, Rowesville, SC or to the American Lung Association.
