James T.
Dunning, Jr.
October 10, 1947 – April 5, 2026
James Theo Dunning Jr. “Jim” went into the eternal arms of Jesus on April 5th, 2026, surrounded by family. Jim was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on October 10th,1947, to the late James Theo Dunning “Buck” and Willie Doris Reeves Dunning. Jim entered the United States Navy on September of 1968 as an electronic mechanic where he received the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in November of 1973 when he went on to devote 35 plus years to the IRS until his retirement. It was during his training at Saufley Field in Pensacola, Florida that Jim would find the love of his life with whom he would spend the next 55 glorious years. Jim and Cathie enjoyed traveling and one of their most memorable trips was to Japan. Jim took great pleasure in his yard and enjoyed working in it daily. Jim had a fascination with a particular plant called the midnight blooming series, an original plant given to him by his late father. Jim was a kindhearted man who didn't meet a stranger with his beautiful blue eyes and would be considered a jack- of-all-trades.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Richard Sumpter Dunning and Robert Wade Dunning. Jim is survived by his loving wife Catherine Ann Flores Dunning, brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Linda Reedy, sister-in-law Sheryl Wolfe Dunning, nieces and nephews Gina (Hoyt) Jameson, Carrie (Keny) Showman, Rebecca (Jared) Kittrell, Mary Alice (Christopher) Smoak, and Caleb (Kelsey) Dunning and a great number of great nieces and nephews. Jim was also richly blessed with friends who became family who stood by him and Cathie in their most challenging times; Linda Alexander, Stan Grokulsky, Robbie and Dawn Weathers, Kelly and Sandy Reid, Pat and Jean Caufield. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Community Hospice and the hospice nurse who took care of Jim during his final moments and expressed compassion to Cathie and our family.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Wounded Warriors Project.
