John Curtis “Swampman” Hill, 64 of the Canaan Community passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Born on November 17, 1959 in Orangeburg, S.C., he was the son of the late Charles Everette Hill and Lessie Mae Hoover Hill. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Debra Gayle Hill and Sandra Janette Nix Williams.
John spent his career as a dedicated truck driver, a job that allowed him to travel and experience the vastness of the country that he loved. His career also afforded him the flexibility to pursue his passions, which included hunting, fishing, attending car shows and participating in drag races. Known affectionately by his CB handle “Swampman,” John earned this nickname due to his love for and time spent in the swamps of Canaan, a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for nature.
John leaves behind a family who cherished him deeply, including his son, Curt (Lisa) Hill of Walterboro, South Carolina; grandchildren, Heather and Leroy Hill of Walterboro; brothers, Charles E. Hill and Michael D. Hill of Cope, South Carolina; nieces, Tracy Wade of Cope and Jamie Wade of Orangeburg; nephews, Johnny Wade of Cope, Billy, Chris and William Nix of Eufaula, Alabama and many great-nieces and nephews. His willingness to help the old timers in his community and his presence at local events will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel, 1012 Whitman Street, Orangeburg. Rev. Jim Parnell will be officiating. A private burial will be held.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel prior to the funeral service.
