John "J.T." Thomas Champy, Jr.,69, of 3609 Charleston Highway, Orangeburg, S.C. 29115 died Thursday, November 20, 2014 at his residence.The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m, Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc in Orangeburg, S.C. The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.
Mr. Champy was born on December 23, 1944 in Norman, Oklahoma. The son of the late John T. Champy, Sr and the late Mary June Drummey Stokes Champy. He was retired from Bell South. Mr. Champy was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, S.C. His love for horses had him competing from 1995-2008 in the National Barrel Racing Championship. In 1995 he was the Reserve Senior World Barrel Racing Champion and in 2005 he won the 3D Level World Championship in barrel racing. He was predeceased by his parents; 3 half sisters; Eddie Louise Stokes Crosby Jennings, Ruby Elaine C. Stewart and Ellen S. Chadwick; 3 half brothers; John C. Champy, Thomas J. Champy and Cecil C. Champy.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Arant Champy of Orangeburg, S.C.; 2 daughters; Robin Dantzler (Robbie) of Florence, S.C. and Natalie Paige Champy of Charleston, S.C.; a grandson Bobby Dantlzer of Florence; 2 sisters; Barbara C. Bryd of Greenville, S.C. and June Marie C. Thomas of Troy, Michigan.
