Joyce M. (Johnson) Austin, a cherished mother, grandmama, great grandmama, sister and beloved hairdresser, departed this world on December 14, 2025, at the age of 76, surrounded by her devoted family. Born on October 19, 1949, in Sumter, S.C., Joyce lived a life distinguished by her profound love for her family and a commitment to her career.

Joyce's professional journey as a hairdresser spanned many years and was marked by an exceptional bond she formed with her coworkers and clients, who often regarded her not merely as their hairdresser, but as a trusted confidante and friend. Her artistry and dedication behind the chair were complemented by a warmth that transcended the art of hairstyling, allowing her to cultivate lasting relationships with those she served.

A steadfast anchor in her family's lives, Joyce was heartbroken following the passing of her beloved husband, Richard Austin, with whom she shared over 43 years of companionship and love. The void left by his absence was profound, yet Joyce remained a beacon of strength and resilience for her daughters, Sheryl Austin McRoy (Patrick) and Jackie Austin Hair (Chris), and for her grandchildren, Jordan Gallman (Kyle), Kasey Hair, and Austin Hair. Her legacy will live on through her great-grandchildren, Rowan Gallman, Holland Hair, River Gallman, and Ryan Gallman, who brought immeasurable joy to her life.

Joyce's familial bonds extended beyond her immediate family; she is survived by her brother, Randy Johnson (Janice), and sister, Jean Wellmon, along with many additional family and friends who will remember her nurturing spirit and boundless generosity.

While she grieved the loss of those dear, including her parents, Lester E. Johnson and Margerie E. Hyatt Johnson, and her beloved grandson, Jacob McLellan, Joyce thrived on the love she shared with her family. Without a doubt, her greatest joy was being a grandmama, and her family was unequivocally her world.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Cordova, South Carolina, on Monday, December 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM, with heartfelt remembrances shared. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  Rev. Brian Self and Dr. Shane Stutzman will be officiating.
