Thompson Funeral Home, Inc.
6:00 - 8:00 pm (Eastern time)
Julia Kizer Powell Hovis, a cherished mother, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2026. Born on March 30, 1937, Julia lived a life marked by dedication, compassion, and a deep love for those around her.
Julia’s commitment to caring for others was evident in her remarkable career spanning over forty years in the nursing field. She obtained her associate’s degree in Nursing from Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College, a foundation that supported her lifelong mission to provide comfort and healing to many. Those who knew Julia best admired her unwavering devotion not only to her patients but above all, to her family.
Julia treasured her family deeply. She is survived by her loving son, Mike A. Powell; and her sister, Grace Kizer, along with a number of loving nieces and nephews. Though she faced the sorrow of having lost several dear family members throughout her life — including her parents, Olin and Rubella Dufford Kizer, her sisters; Peggy Childs, Dorothy Zeigler, Helen Curuso, and her brothers Ryan, Harold, Hubert, and McConnell Kizer — Julia’s strength and love never wavered. She remained a steady beacon of comfort and encouragement to those she held dear.
Visitation to honor Julia’s memory will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., located at 1012 Whitman St SE in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
A graveside service will be announced at a later date.
Julia Kizer Powell Hovis will be remembered not only for her professional dedication but most importantly for the love she radiated and the lives she enriched. Her gentle spirit and loving heart remain an everlasting gift to all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace and may her memory be a blessing to all who loved her.
