Karen Shuler Hughes, a loving mother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at her residence in Elloree, South Carolina. Born on September 13, 1949, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Karen’s life was deeply rooted in the community she loved and served.

Karen spent many fulfilling years working with Lake Marion Automotive, where her dedication and spirit left a lasting impression on those around her. 

She is survived by her beloved sons, Bradley Hughes (Bryana) of Elloree, and Franklin Hughes (Dale), also of Elloree. Karen took immense pride in her grandchildren—Selina, Samantha, Kayla, Delane, and Dustin Hughes—who brought joy and light into her life, as well as by a number of great-grandchildren and by her brothers, Mack Allen Irick and Michael Long Zeigler, who remain close to her memory.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas “T.M.” Shuler, Jr. and Grace Griffin Zeigler, and her brothers, Tommy M. Shuler, III and Wayne L. Shuler. 

A Memorial Gathering will be held to honor Karen’s life and the indelible impact she made on all who knew her. Friends and family are invited to come together on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., located at 1012 Whitman St SE, Orangeburg, SC 29115. This time will be set aside to share stories, celebrate her life, and support one another in this time of loss.

Karen Shuler Hughes’ warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. Her spirit lives on in the family she loved so dearly and in the community that was lucky to call her their own.
