Maj (Ret) Thomas W. Murden

November 12, 1939 — May 2, 2025

MAJ (Ret) Thomas W. Murden, 85, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, in Cordova, South Carolina. A devoted husband, father, granddaddy, great-granddaddy, and veteran, Tom lived a life marked by service, dedication, and quiet strength.

Born on November 12, 1939, in Bolentown, South Carolina, Tom was the son of William T. Murden, Sr. and Sue Garrick Murden. He graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1957.

Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army with distinction from 1958-1978.  He was a paratrooper and served two tours in Vietnam flying both fixed-wing aircraft and Huey helicopters. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he earned numerous commendations for his bravery and dedication.  He attended Officer Candidate School from 1964 to 1965, and later pursued higher education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, earning his degree in 1974. Among his many honors were the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with ten awards, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. His military career reflected a deep sense of duty and honor that remained with him throughout his life.

Following his retirement from the Army, Tom continued to serve others through his work at Ag First Farm Credit until his retirement there as well. His professional life was characterized by integrity and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

A man of faith, Tom was a faithful member of Wesley Grove United Methodist Church. His presence within the church community was a source of strength and comfort to those around him.

Tom shared over 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary Sanders Murden—a partnership built on love and mutual respect that stood as a testament to enduring commitment. Together they raised their daughter Susan M. Bass (Phil), who brought them immense pride and joy.

He was a cherished granddaddy to Kyle T. Delaney (Treleigh) and Caleb L. Bass (Jeannette), and a loving great-granddaddy to Dunleigh Delaney and Khanyezi Bass. Tom also leaves behind his sister Josie M. Williams and a number of nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Rivers Murden and William T. “Dubby” Murden Jr.; and sister Emily Cheryl Murden.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and may his legacy of service continue to inspire future generations.
