Martha Copelan Berry

October 21, 1925 — October 12, 2013

Mrs. Martha Copelan Berry passed away peacefully Saturday, October 12, 2013, nine days before her 88th birthday, after a brief illness.

Graveside Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 14, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Toni Pipkins and the Rev. Ryan Tucker officiating. Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

Mrs. Berry was born in Greensboro, Georgia on October 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Rowe W. Copelan and the late Florence Park Copelan.

She was married to the late Harold "Harry" Brewton Berry for 62 years, before his passing in 2005.

Martha was a registered Nurse and a 1945 graduate of the Tri-County Hospital School of Nursing in Orangeburg, S.C. She was the surgical assistant for Harry L. Tuten, M.D. for 34 years. After retirement, she worked for 20 years as a nursing supervisor for Orangeburg Nursing Home. She was active in local districts and state levels of the South Carolina Nursing Association during her earlier years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Orangeburg for 70 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Harrianne Berry Lynch and her husband, Reverend T. Dale Lynch; two grandsons, Berry Copelan Lynch and Adam Collins Lynch and his wife Bonnie Lynch; one sister, Betty Lunsford; one brother, Charles Copelan and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Blanche Johansen; two brothers, Roy Copelan, Sr. and Jim Fairey, Sr.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation and thanks to the Regional Medical Center CCU Staff and Dr. Vann Beth Shuler for their dedication, skill, care and commitment to their profession.

Martha was an inspiration and mentor to many young nurses and their careers. She was loved and treasured by her family and all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.

Friends may call at her residence.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 1240 Russell Street, Orangeburg, S.C.29115.
