Obituary

Michael Edward "Mike" Chestnut, a devoted husband, and father, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at his residence. Born on February 20, 1965, Mike led a life marked by dedication to his family, and the children he inspired throughout his remarkable career.

A 1993 graduate of South Carolina State University, Mike devoted over 27 years to the public school system as a Physical Education teacher, currently sharing his passion and expertise at Barnwell Elementary School. Beyond his role as an educator, he was a committed coach of football and baseball. Mike's love for children and his pride in being a husband and father were hallmarks of his life, reflecting his deep commitment to those he cared for most.

Mike also proudly served in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that brought him to Hawaii, a place he loved dearly and fondly remembered, especially during a recent family visit. His zest for life was evident in his enthusiasm for Christmas, a holiday he cherished and celebrated with festive decorations and joy.

He shared over 28 years of marriage with his loving wife, Stephanie Hutto Chestnut, who stood by his side through all seasons of life. Together, they celebrated the growth and achievements of their son, Seth Chestnut and his wife, Darbi and supported his baseball career with unwavering encouragement. Mike's family circle included his sister, Robin England (Richard), and the extended family of his in-laws: Raymond and Shirley Hutto, Jr., sisters-in-law, Sherry Bair (Lonnie), Sandi Templeton, (Michael), nieces, Santanna and Makenna Templeton, Brianna Carmalt (Alex), nephew, Mikey Templeton, Jr., and great-niece Cambrie Jane Carmalt and many additional extended family members and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Margie Chestnut, and his brother, Brian Chestnut.

Family, friends, former students, and colleagues are invited to honor Mike’s life at a visitation held on March 23, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, followed immediately by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Columbia Road Church of God in Orangeburg, South Carolina, located at 2485 Columbia Road Northeast.  Burial will follow at Mt. Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2610 Ninety 6 Road, Neeses. Rev. Travis Shirley and Rev. Henry Chavis will be officiating. Family and friends may visit the residence at other times.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Mark Carson, Ryan Pulaski, Denny Bailey, Mark Staton, Mike Puckett and Huey Robinson.

Mike Chestnut's legacy of love, education, and service leaves an indelible mark on all who knew him. His gentle guidance and generous spirit will be profoundly missed but forever cherished.
