Michael David “Trolley” Wise, Sr., was born on January 17, 1942, in Orangeburg, SC. He lived his life with a genuine warmth, infectious sense of humor, and love of storytelling that touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. Trolley passed away on January 6, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family.
His generous spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him back. Trolley's dedication to hard work was evident throughout his life. He attended Wofford College and an insatiable curiosity became a hallmark of his character. After a rewarding career, he transitioned into entrepreneurship by founding Wise Well Drilling, where he poured his efforts into building a successful business that reflected his industrious nature. He had many interests and passions, most notably his love for football. A former running back for Orangeburg High School, he loved watching games – even if he didn’t have a rooting interest – and dearly valued teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of competition. Trolley was a man of few words, but when he did speak you could be sure that you would be hearing something important or hilarious – and sometimes both. He enjoyed trading tales (tall and otherwise) with good friends over a weekly men’s breakfast and dropping pearls of wisdom for anyone lucky to be around when he got the urge.
A devoted husband, Trolley leaves behind his beloved wife of over 56 years, Carmen S. “Connie” Wise, who was his steadfast partner. Their bond was a model of love and loyalty, obvious to anyone who ever spent time with them. He is also survived by his son, Michael D. Wise, Jr. (Amber) of Hollywood, SC, and his daughter, Ashlyn W. (John) Kress, of Atlanta, GA. Trolley was especially proud of his role as “Pops” to his granddaughters, Ella Bess, Cicely Carmen (C.C.), Ressie Belle, and grandson, Walker. He cherished every moment he spent with them, whether it was dressing up (Pops included) in superhero costumes, cheering them on in their athletic endeavors, or just cuddling in his favorite chair. Trolley also leaves behind a brother, Walter Julian Wise (Thelma), a sister, Libby Wise Sommer, and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Helen Wolfe Wise, and his brother, Steve Wise.
As we gather to celebrate Trolley's life, we invite those who loved him and were touched by his kindness and strength to join in remembrance. Visitation will be held on January 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg, SC, followed by a Funeral Service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Jerry French will be officiating.
