She taught those around her the measureless value of kindness, the comfort of presence, and the power of unconditional love.
Minnie Lou Scott, passed away peacefully at her home in Orangeburg, S.C., on Friday, June 26, 2026, surrounded by the family she cherished. Born on February 28, 1929, in Orangeburg, Minnie Lou lived a life woven from love, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to those she held dear.
From her earliest days, Minnie Lou was marked by a gentle kindness and a deep warmth that radiated to everyone she met. The daughter of Jesse and Beatrice Barnes Haddock, both gone before her, Minnie Lou grew up in a close-knit family.
Her later years blossomed into a rich, multigenerational legacy. Minnie Lou’s capacity for love was perhaps most evident in her role as the matriarch of a large and loving family. She is mourned, but celebrated, by her devoted daughter, Susan (Eddie) Harley. Minnie Lou’s heart expanded with each new member of her family, and she lovingly embraced her role as "Nanny" to her grandchildren: Ken (Regina) Scott, Michael (Porcher) Scott, Glenda Scott, Curtis (Hailey) Scott, Wendy (Lee) Thomas, Misty Royal, Chris (Rachel) Harley, Scott (Keller) Harley and granddaughter-in-law, Joanne Royal. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart.
A new generation brought Minnie Lou even greater joy as she welcomed numerous great-grandchildren: Alexis Scott, Elizabeth Scott, Isaiah Royal, Jasmyn Royal, Jake Griggs, Skylar Parker, Sienna Douglas, River Harley, Hollis Harley, Lily Harley, Grady Harley, and Darby Harley. She also embraced her great-great grandchildren including Aleeah Scott and Hallie Scott. She also leaves behind a beloved brother, Jim Haddock.
Though Minnie Lou’s loss leaves a hollow space, her memory reunites her with those who predeceased her: her parents, her beloved husband, James H. Scott, Jr.; her sons, Wendell and Wayne Scott, her daughter, Gale Rivenbark, her grandson, Aaron Royal, , her great-grandson, Adam Scott, her brothers, Jesse Haddock, and Rudolph “Bo”Haddock. They are remembered with love, and their absence was always quietly felt in Minnie Lou’s heart.
To know Minnie Lou was to experience unwavering acceptance and steadfast support. She taught those around her the measureless value of kindness, the comfort of presence, and the power of unconditional love. Her legacy is found not only in family bonds, her steadfast love and devotion to Christ, but also in all the lives she quietly touched, encouraging and supporting each person in her steady, gentle way.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to caregivers, Nancy Dubose, Barbara Smith, Jennifer Weathers, and Cheyenne Kester. The love, care and respect they showed to Minnie Lou did not go unnoticed.
A visitation in remembrance of Minnie Lou Scott will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 11 AM to 12 PM at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 1012 Whitman St SE, Orangeburg, SC. The funeral service will follow at 12 PM, also at Thompson Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens, 4830 Columbia Road, Orangeburg, SC, immediately following the funeral service.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Mrs. Minnie Lou’s grandsons and great-grandsons.
As family and friends gather in coming days, they will embrace and celebrate a life lived fully and lovingly—a life that continues to shine through all those she leaves behind. Minnie Lou Scott’s memory will be treasured always.
