Mitchell Union of Orangeburg passed away on April 9, 2016. He was born on December 31, 1921. He was the son of the late James Joseph Union and the late Sadie C. Union. He was so proud of his heritage and taught all who would listen the secrets of his ethnic cooking, usually accomplished while listening to his albums from the 40's. It was not unusual to see him jitterbugging in the kitchen with his wife, Sadie while his pots were bubbling. In fact, Mitchell loved music so much that he would often serenade his passengers with songs of the past as he drove on family outings.
Mitchell was an avid reader, gardener, workout fanatic and computer geek, but most of all a father and grandfather who was admired and revered.
Mitchell served our country in World War II and the Korean War. He obtained the rank of Lieutenant Commander as a pilot in the United States Navy. He captivated all who knew him with his wartime stories, his thought provoking ideas of the universe as well as the political atmosphere of our country. Mitchell loved his country but he loved his family most of all.
He is survived by his wife, best friend and the love of his life of 65 years, Sadie Mary Deep Union. Mitchell and Sadie were blessed with five children and their loving spouses; Mr. Mitchell (Tony) Anthony Union of Boiling Springs, S.C., Mr. Richard Union of Orangeburg, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. Melody and Joseph Sliker of Charleston, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. Christopher and Nancy Union of Charleston, S.C. and Mr. and Mrs. Dene and Michael Fulton of Oxford, Mississippi. Mitchell was loved by ten grandchildren; Brittni, Chelsea, Alex, Josh, Jake, Maryana, Austin, Russell, Laura, Ellen and her husband Chris.
Mitchell touched all who knew him with his charm, quick wit and sense of humor. He will be missed but his sense of honor, his pride in family and country and his love of learning will be remembered always.
A celebration of life and a visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc in Orangeburg, S.C.
A private military service will be held at a later date.
