Orangeburg

Nadine Irma (Hughes) Gramling, a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on July 4, 1937, in Cope, S.C., Nadine was the youngest of five children and spent her life in Orangeburg, always cherishing the community that cradled her from the very beginning at a little yellow house on the hill off of 301.

Nadine's career began in the early 1960's at John Henry Dukes Insurance Agency, where she had the thrill of meeting her future husband, Hugh Gramling, in 1964 while at work. She dedicated over 50 years to her vocation, witnessing the transformation of the agency into Robert Bryant and Sons Insurance, where her commitment and sweet spirit became an integral part of the office environment.

Her personality shone through in everything she did—Nadine was known for her loving nature and her genuine enjoyment of people. She had a knack for baking, famous for her remarkable pecan lace cookies and glazed pecans, which delighted all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Craft nights with friends filled her evenings with fun, reading also brought her joy and every holiday season, she brought warmth and cheer into her home with her cherished collection of Santa Claus figures.

Throughout her life, Nadine remained a faithful lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Orangeburg, a testament to her strong values and devotion. Her loving presence will be deeply missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.

She leaves behind her adoring daughter and son-in-law, Jane "Libbi" Gramling and Jimmy Bates. Her granddaughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Reams, brings comfort and pride to her memory, along with her bonus son, Philip (Lara) Reams. Nadine is also survived by her close cousin, Nelda Davis Green, as well as her close nieces, Johnnie Hughes Robertson and Helen Hughes Murphy, who fondly remember their aunt's nurturing spirit.

Nadine was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 47 years, Hugh Gramling, and her parents, Ralph C. Hughes, Sr. and Mattie J. Davis Brunson. She was also reunited in spirit with her siblings, John Burton Hughes, Ralph C. Hughes, Jr., Lois Hughes Felder, and Annie Jean Hughes, who preceded her in passing.

In lieu of fresh flowers the family requests potted plants as a way to honor Mrs. Nadine.
