Paul Garrett Harper

Paul Garrett Harper died after a brief illness on Thursday, October 16, 2014. Graveside services will be at 12:00 P.M., Monday, October 20, 2014 at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, S.C. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg is in charge of the services.

Honorary pallbearers are Chet Pettycord, Phil Drawdy, Ron Smith, John Boyleston, D.D. Salley and Dick Wolfe.

Mr. Harper was born on October 15, 1923 in Alapaha, Ga. He was the son of the late Haywood David Harper and the late Ola Garrett Harper. He was formally from Orangeburg, Lake Murray, and Beaufort, S.C. Mr. Harper was a 1949 graduate of the University of Georgia. He served in WWII with the United States Navy. Mr. Harper was the retired business owner of Harper's Appliances and Used Furniture. He was a former president of the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce and one of the founders of the Rose Festival in Orangeburg, S.C. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, S.C. Mr. Harper was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Wilson Harper; a son Mark Thomas Harper and a daughter Mary Shannon Harper.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Hope Harper (Ron) Smith of Beaufort, S.C., 1 son P. David Harper of Savannah, GA and Keystone, Colorado; 3 grandchildren: Elizabeth Harper (Keith) Louer of John's Creek, GA, Shembra Smith (Greg) Carter of Beaufort, S.C. and Sherida Smith (Nick) Lengyel of Houston, TX and 6 great-grandchildren and former wife and friend Mary Lovejoy Harper of Orangeburg, S.C.
