Ret. SMSGT Harold Kelly, born on January 13, 1930, in Anderson, South Carolina, passed from this life on October 1, 2025, at his residence. His remarkable journey through life was filled with dedication, love, and a profound commitment to service that touched the hearts of many.
A decorated Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Harold's military career spanned over thirty-two years, culminating in his retirement as a respected SMSGT. His service not only exemplified courage and resilience but instilled in him a deep sense of duty that permeated all aspects of his life. After his distinguished military service, he warmly imparted his knowledge and experience to the next generation by teaching ROTC at Orangeburg High School for many years. His influence extended beyond the classroom, fostering discipline and instilling values in his students that would serve them throughout their lives.
In addition to his military and educational pursuits, Harold found joy in the realm of photography, owning and operating Hal Kelly Photography. His creative eye and ability to capture candid moments made him a cherished photographer in the community. He viewed the world through a lens of beauty and passion, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories preserved in photographs that will be treasured by many.
Harold shared a lifelong passion for golf with his beloved wife of 73 years, Mary P. Kelly. Their shared days spent on the golf course were filled with laughter and companionship, embodying a partnership built on mutual admiration and shared interests. An avid fan of Clemson Football, Harold's enthusiasm for the game was contagious, bringing joy not only to himself but to those around him.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Susan K. Brown, and a loving lineage that includes grandchildren, Hal Brown (Crystol), Kelly Derry, and Matt Derry (Cindy), alongside granddaughter-in-law, Amanda Dennis. Harold delighted in the company of his great-grandchildren, Hayden Brown, Christopher Brown, Jacob Dennis, James Dennis, Jewels Derry, and William "Liam" Derry, who brightened his days and filled his heart with joy. His family, alongside an additional number of dear friends, mourns the loss of a remarkable man whose legacy will be cherished for generations to come.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin and Pearline Kelly; his beloved wife, Mary P. Kelly; daughter Nancy Derry; grandsons Michael Dennis, Jr. and James T. Brown; as well as his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Joe Bolt. Each of these departed individuals played a significant role in his life, shaping him into the man cherished by his family and friends.
A graveside service will be held in his honor on October 9, 2025, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina with full military honors.
