It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Melvin Carter, Sr., a cherished patriarch who touched the lives of many during his time on Earth. He left this world on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the age of 96, surrounded by the love of his family at MUSC in Orangeburg.
Thomas founded and operated Carter Wholesale Meats from 1969 until his well-deserved retirement in 2002. His dedication to his business was matched only by the warmth he extended to everyone he encountered. He had a vibrant personality and an appreciation for the simple joys of life, often finding solace in fishing, the shores of the beach, and the peacefulness of the mountains. Thomas loved being with people and thrived in the presence of family, which brought him immeasurable joy throughout his life.
As a proud veteran of the United States Army, Thomas served during the Korean Conflict and received the Meritorious Service award, a testament to his commitment and bravery. This proud service shaped much of who he was and provided him with lifelong friendships and memories.
Thomas cherished the role of "Pabby," his beloved nickname, relishing in moments spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a devoted father to his children: Thomas "Tommy" Carter, Jr. (Melissa), Janice Richardson, Michael Carter (Tracy), and Karen Ferguson. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Edward Carter, Me'Chelle Byrum (Brad), Jonathan Carter (Ericka Eugeni), Lauren Wilson (Chris), Randy Carter, Jamie Carter (Rachel), RicAnne Ferguson, Jason Toole (Krystal), Jay Toole (Ashley)—along with nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Thelma Stewart, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Billie Carter, whose companionship he cherished deeply. Also waiting for him were his parents, Edward and Julia Jennings Carter, his son-in-law, Jack Richardson, along with brothers Walter, Bill, Marion, Arnold Carter and sister Lois Myrick.
A visitation honoring Thomas will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg. His funeral service will take place the following day on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg. Pastor Thomas Brookshire will be officiating.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Caleb Kenney, Colie Livingston, Greg Livingston, Chris Wilson, Brad Byrum and Holden Byrum.
