Vera Browder (Rowell) Benton

Vera Browder Benton , 91, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Northgate Baptist Church in Orangeburg.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg.  Rev. Tant Ehrhardt will be officiating.

Mrs. Benton was born on May 27, 1925 in Orangeburg County.  She was the daughter of the late Lucious Lawton Rowell and the late Annie Mae Carrigg Rowell Darnell.  She was a member of Northgate Baptist Church.  Mrs. Benton was the Tax Assessor of Orangeburg County for 22 years.  She was the first female Tax Assessor in the State of South Carolina as well as the first female appointed to the Board of Assessing Officials.   She was the widow of the late George H. Browder and the late Paul Benton.  She was predeceased by her son, Cecil Lawton Browder; siblings, Grover, Clifford, Chester, Shelley (Dutch) and  Harry Rowell; Addie R. Crosby, Louise R. Player and Loretta R. Jackson.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra B. Youngs of Orangeburg, Beverly B. Brown (George) and Ruby B. Polin all of Orangeburg; step-children, Paula Keitt, Linda B. Stillinger and Terry R. Benton; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; special nieces, Gale Bostock, Blanch Davis and Patsy McCormick and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 2:00-3:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service at Northgate Baptist Church.
