William Edward “Ed” Brant, 92, of Orangeburg passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 26, 2023.
Mr. Ed affectionately known as “Poppy” was known and loved by everyone that knew him. When you ask someone to describe him, they reply, “he was a good man.” He grew up in a large family in Orangeburg. He was the son of the late Bertie Brant and the late Lillie Mills Brant. Mr. Ed served his country in the United States Army. He then went on to retire after 19 years with the Orangeburg City Police Department as a Lieutenant. During his time as a police officer, he was recognized as the Department of Public Safety Patrol Officer of the year. After retirement, he worked part-time with Orangeburg National Bank. Mr. Ed was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and the Progressive Masonic Lodge #356. He will be remembered for his love of his family, his church and his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Larry Davenport, brothers, Eugene Brant, Fred Brant, John Henry Brant, George Brant, B.L. “Luke” Brant and James Brant.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 28 years, Devone Brant; daughter, Robin (Jimmy) Johnson; granddaughter, Nichole Johnson Hudgens (Joshua); a very special great-granddaughter, Caroline Hudgens; brother, Roger (Mary) Brant; sisters, Gertrude Thompson, Betty Carson, Mary Cunio, Gloria Chapline; sister-in-law, Geraldean Maples; brother-in-law, Freddie Joe (Annaree) Shular; a number of nieces, nephews and special friends and his beloved fur baby, “Bobo.”
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel, 1012 Whitman Street, Orangeburg. Rev. Lois Helms will be officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2720 Broughton Street, Orangeburg with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel prior to the funeral service.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Billy Brant, Kevin Brant, Mike Brant, Jimmy Wingard, Jr., Harold Hughes and Jerry Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers will be all active and retired Orangeburg Public Safety Officers.
