William Hester "Billy" O'Cain, passed away on January 17, 2026, at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, after a brief illness. Born on June 30, 1942, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Billy lived a life rich in experiences and connections that left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he served his country with honor and integrity. After completing his military service, Billy embarked on a fulfilling career in the restaurant industry, where he managed Horne's Restaurant for over 25 years. His warm personality made him a favorite among customers and staff alike. Following his retirement, he transitioned into a new role as a security guard with Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Florence, South Carolina, where his friendly demeanor continued to shine brightly.
Billy was known for his love of conversation and his ability to make friends wherever he went. He never met a stranger and would often be seen engaging warmly with those around him. His passion for collecting treasures and attending yard sales was a testament to his adventurous spirit and appreciation for life’s small joys.
He leaves behind his daughters, Renee Smith (Chris) and Sheila Harrison (James). He was a proud grandfather to Gretchen Baker (Jordan), Tessa Stafford (Jacob), Jade H. Lamb (Kody) and Alec Smith (Madison) and a great-grandfather to Memphis, Bode and Amelia Baker; Charlee, Weston, Jude and Killian Stafford and Hudson Smith. Billy is also survived by his brother, Frankie O'Cain, and sister, Connie O. Whisenhunt (Andy), along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins who were fortunate to have him in their lives.
Billy's legacy is one filled with kindness, laughter, and love. Although he is reunited with his deceased family members—his parents, Peter D. O'Cain and Lila Champy O'Cain, his first and second wives, Elizabeth O'Cain and Sylvia O'Cain, and his brothers, Ret. CSM Tommy O'Cain, Ret. CSM Roger O'Cain, and Ray O'Cain—his spirit will continue to live on through the stories and memories shared by his family and friends.
Funeral arrangements will be announced.
As we reflect on the beautiful life of William Hester "Billy" O'Cain, we remember him for his hearty conversations, and the warmth he brought to everyone he encountered. He is dearly missed but will forever remain in our hearts.
