Annie Fanning Obituary

Graveside services for Annie Mae Fanning of The Oaks, Orangeburg, formally of Neeses, will be held at the Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery on Saturday, August 31st, at 11:00 with Reverend Brandon Fuller officiating.

Annie Mae Smith Fanning was born June 3, 1926, the daughter of Homer Oscar Smith and Lila Bell Baltzegar Smith. She was the wife of Phillip Thomas Fanning, Sr.

She is survived by, daughter-in-law, Nancy Fanning and son Charles (Chuck) Smith Fanning (Bonnie); two daughters, Phyllis Fanning Churchwell (Jerry) and Sharon Kim Summer (Buddy). Grandchildren are Donna Diamond, Phillip Fanning III, Hope Byrd, Lee Churchwell Jr., Mandy Churchwell, Heidi Newton, Cari Fanning, Kacey Wilbanks, Dixie Caulder, and Carl Michael Clegg Jr.; and fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by a brother Charles Lindy (Jo) Smith of Louisville, Kentucky and a sister Amelia Boykin of Walterboro. South Carolina and sister-in-law Marjorie Smith.

She was predeceased by her husband, Phillip Thomas Fanning Sr,; son, Phillip Thomas Fanning, Jr.; three brothers; Thomas James Smith, Wade Hampton Smith and Bonney Harris Smith.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Thomas Fanning, III, Lee Churchwell Jr, Carl Michael Clegg Jr., Hugh Diamond, David Newton, Stephen Thomas.

“Granny” or “Mannie” as she was lovingly called was a homemaker and loving companion of her husband. She loved to read, gardening, canning. Many of her family and friends enjoy her homemade quilts.  She was a wonderful story teller and enjoyed keeping a life-long journal. Her stories will be retold and shared for years to come. She loved butchering and a good “pudding pot” and making sausage.

 Visitation will be at Thompson Funeral Home on Friday, August 30th , 2019 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. Family and friends may call or visit at the home of Jerry and Phyllis Churchwell and Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. Family will receive friends in the Lebanon United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall following the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to the Lebanon United Methodist Church Missions, Livingston UMC Men’s Club, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Thanks to the staff of The Oaks (Vicki and Melody) and staff at the Regional Medical Center MSSU unit (Candice, Bralyn, and Shannon) for her care.
