Halbert Glenn Bates, 90, of Orangeburg passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at St. George Baptist Church in Orangeburg. Burial will follow at St. George Baptist Church Cemetery. Dr. David Anderson will be officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers Jimmy Garrick, Tommy Garrick, Donald Garrick, Kevin Pettit, Stuart Pettit, Ray Jameson, Russ Jameson, Ray Hutto.
Mr. Bates was born on December 9, 1928 in Orangeburg. He was the son of the late Glenn Bates and the late Annie Mae Sanford Bates. He served in the United States National Guard. Mr. Bates was a lifetime member of St. George Baptist Church. He was also a member of Bates-Way Hunting Club and Daleburg Hunting Club. Mr. Bates was the owner and operator of Bates Variety Store in Orangeburg. He was predeceased by his wife, Maxine F. Bates; his son, Hal Bates and sisters, Alice Garrick and Ellen Bizzell.
Survivors include his sisters, Mary Dell Gray of Prosperity, Margaret Pettit (Eugene) of Orangeburg; brother-in-law, Ted Bizzell and a number of nieces and nephews.
