Hughes of Orangeburg; sister, Janie Ackerman of Orangeburg; grandchildren, Candace Green of Greer, Nicole Aston (Matt) of Atlanta, Kyle Hughes (Jillian) of Charleston, Maggie Brownlee (Justin) of Summerville, Katelin Hughes (Chris) of Charleston, and Al Thomas Hughes of Summerville; seven great-grandchildren; niece, April Edwards (Hal) of Creston; special daughter in love, Kathryn Wienges of St. Matthews; and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Newton “Pete” Burke and Clay Champy Burke; and husbands, Al M. Hughes, Arthur McIva “Mac” Dennis, and Henry Milford Vaughn.

Shirley was born on January 10, 1938 in Orangeburg, SC and graduated from Orangeburg High School. In 1961, she and her husband, Al, opened Lighting Creations and were proud to serve the Midlands by offering “every kind of light under the sun.” After Al’s passing, Shirley continued to operate and grow the business, shaping it into one of the largest lighting showrooms in the Southeast. Lighting Creations was a cornerstone of the Orangeburg community for 50 years.

Shirley was a dedicated Christian and was a lifelong member of Northside Baptist Church. She loved music and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce and several antique car clubs for many years.

Shirley was an avid Clemson Tigers fan and was an IPTAY Club member. She spent many Saturdays cheering on the Tigers with friends and family. She enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley, entertaining at her home, and sharing her love of cooking with friends and family.

Shirley loved her family fiercely. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, and grandmother and was the matriarch of her family. Her heart was pure, and she always saw the best in others. She did anything she could to help someone in need. She radiated joy throughout her final days and always emphasized how deeply she had been blessed by the Lord.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to The Legacy of Orangeburg for their care over the last several months.
